During my first session with Stacy, she said I would feel better in six weeks if I rigorously followed her nutrition program. I went home and marked my calendar for one through six weeks because I believe in using data. In truth, at about the three-week point, I felt lighter, more energized, happier.
I told Stacy during that first session that despite being 69, I wanted to lose 20 pounds of fat and gain 5 of muscle. She said she was in!
She changed my diet a lot: No white bread, no cookies, etc. However, I was never hungry (except when my plans went awry), because there was no limit on protein or veggies. I probably tripled my protein and started eating—and seeing—fruits and veggies by color. Instead of making salads on the basis of what was in the fridge, I shopped for colors. A staple now is “ROYGBV” salad: red, orange, yellow, green, blue/violet and white/tan. A joy to create and eat!
I had fun exploring new foods and negotiating at the grocery store, and my husband was fun coming along for the ride. He was the first to notice, for instance, that after a few attempts our berries with certain foods didn’t really need the sweetness I was adding to make this breakfast more enjoyable.
After two or three months of upping my diet and losing a few pounds, it was time to have a serious discussion about my brilliant array of weights, sorely underused. Stacy watched me run through the exercises I wanted to do, checking my posture, technique and challenge level. We wrote out a routine and set a schedule; the rest is up to me. I must admit that getting myself to work out is easier, knowing that Stacy (and my husband) are counting on me.
I’ll never know if I achieve my five-pound muscle goal because I’m not willing to go to the expense of finding out. However, I do feel stronger: I think my thighs lift more easily when I walk and that my ab muscles activate more strongly during core exercises.
The whole experience has been a great learning exercise with the joy that comes from learning and changing. If you’re at all interested, I urge you to start. There’s no commitment so you can quit anytime.”
